Draft · last updated 31 October 2026
This is an honest, accurate draft of how the app works today — but it is a starting template, not legal advice. Please have it reviewed before you rely on it, and set these:
The short version: Explorer HQ is built for children and designed to collect as little as possible. It runs in your child’s browser and keeps progress on the device. No ads, no tracking. Optionally, a parent can create a sync account (email + password) hosted on your own server to carry progress between devices — that is the only personal data involved, and it is entirely optional.
Explorer HQ is a learning app intended to be set up and supervised by a parent or guardian for a child’s use. Account-level settings are kept behind a grown-up check.
When you set up an explorer profile, the app saves the following on the device only, in the browser’s local storage:
That’s all. The app does not collect real names, email addresses, phone numbers, photos, precise location, contacts, or any payment information.
All of the above lives in your browser’s localStorage on the device you use. It is not transmitted to a server, and we cannot see it. It stays until you clear it. If several children share the device, each has a separate local profile.
Explorer HQ contains no advertising, no third-party analytics or trackers, no social media buttons, and no in-app chat. We do not sell or share any information, because we do not collect any.
The grown-ups section links to outside shops and learning resources (for buying electronics kits, and sites like Khan Academy or NASA Kids’ Club). Those are separate websites with their own privacy policies. The app never sends your child to the open web on its own.
The app currently loads its display fonts from Google Fonts. When a page loads, your browser requests the font files from Google’s servers, which means Google receives your IP address as part of that request. No profile data is included. (See the flag at the top — this can be removed by self-hosting the fonts.)
To sync progress across devices, a parent can create an account with an email and password. This is optional and off by default. The account and the synced progress are stored on the operator’s own server (in a self-hosted copy, that is your own hosting). Passwords are kept only as a secure one-way hash, never in plain text. No email is needed to use the app without syncing, and an account can be deleted at any time from Grown-ups → Cloud account → Delete account, which removes the stored email and backup.
We take children’s privacy seriously and have designed the app to avoid collecting personal data from children:
If a future version adds optional cloud sign-in to save progress across devices, this policy will be updated first, and any personal data involved (such as a parent’s email for the account) will be described here and gated behind verifiable parental consent.
Because data is stored only in the browser, it remains until you delete the profile, clear the browser’s site data, or uninstall. There is nothing stored on our side to retain or delete.
If the app’s data practices change, we will update this page and its “last updated” date.
